Why choose an implant vs. a bridge to replace missing teeth?

In our office, the two common options for replacing one missing tooth is by replacing it surgically with an implant, or non-surgically with a bridge.
We recommend replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant because it does not affect the adjacent teeth. Dental implants are fused to the bone, and offer optimal strength when chewing.
Bridges are another option to replace missing teeth. Crowns are placed on the adjaScreen Shot 2016-06-29 at 3.06.30 PMcent teeth, with a pontic crown in the middle to fill the space of the missing tooth. While bridges can be less costly up front, overtime they are a more-expensive treatment option because if a piece of the bridge breaks, the entire bridge needs to be replaced. The other downside is that the adjacent teeth have to be prepped to support the bridge, and these teeth may be completely healthy and not otherwise need treatment.
